On November 30th, 1835, Samuel Langhornes Clemens was born. Later, while working on a river boat on the Mississippi, he encountered the term, “mark twain,” which is nautical jargon for there being twelve feet or two fathoms of water. Since twelve feet of water was safe cruising depth, the term was a wonderful thing to hear. So, Samuel adopted the term as his pen name and thus the world received Mark Twain, humorist, novelist, and man of letters. Today, he would have been 177 years old. He left a legacy of works that are still read and celebrated today such as the classic Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and short stories such as The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. One of my favorites of his was The Mysterious Stranger, This story comes off as much more acerbic than previous stories but is still interesting in its almost proto-existentialist philosophical leanings.
